Sick is something I rarely am, so my flu-induced wimpyness can be spotted a mile away. At the grocery store register with medicine after medicine after sour-stomach-friendly squishy food is scanned and placed into my shopping cart, it was apparent that I was not in my best condition. The fact that the bag boy with as much sympathy as he could muster simply saying to me "feel better" is my SPOTD. Though it makes me feel weird to consider a polite gesture like this one a Simple Pleasure, it's something I rarely experience anymore.
There used to be several polite respectful gestures towards strangers in public that were standard and occurred all the time because they were always the right thing to do. Now I consider these to be gems of what society used to be. Examples of these gestures are:
- A person giving up their seat to a pregnant woman on the train.
- Being called "ma'am" or just responding like "Yes, ma'am" or "No, ma'am."
- Seeing somebody drop something and take the time to help them gather it back up like a pile of papers or seeing somebody drop a wallet or cell phone and catch up with them to give it back.
- Mentioning to somebody to "Have a good day" even though you don't know or care if their day will be good or not.
