On the way home from a friend's party in Napa, we stopped to get gas. Through the darkness against the sound of gas gurgling into the car, frogs croaked (or ribbited, not sure which word to use). Natural sounds such as this - of this magnitude sounded like a wave of frogs was about to descend over the gas station - is something I haven't heard since my childhood. I would go for the sound of nature over the sound of busy humans of city life any day. This is my Simple Pleasure of the Day.
Here's a few nature sounds in the middle of the night I also haven't heard in a long time:
- Crickets and their chirping which in itself will always be my definition of true silence.
- Coyotes and their occasional howling.
- Owls and their hoots coming from trees.
